What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

A CSA – Community Supported Agriculture – is a partnership between a farm, or in our situation a group of farms, and you the consumer. According to Local Harvest (www.localharvest.org) “A CSA, (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA”.

The Buy Fresh Buy Local website of PASA –the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture -   (http://www.buylocalpa.org/csa.php) further describes a CSA as “a direct connection between the farmers and the consumers. To join a CSA is to buy a share of the season's harvest. The farmer gains the security of knowing he or she has been paid for a portion of the harvest and the farmer's "community" participates in how and where their food is grown. This direct connection puts the face and place of food in full view. “

Before the start of the season, when the CSA is planning the upcoming year, shares are sold to members of the community at a fixed price. The CSA farmers plan the crops to meet the shares that have been sold. Every week throughout the season, the CSA community receives a box of that week's harvest.

March 26, 2008 (updated: April 26, 2008)

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new CSA, between Wynnorr Farm and a group of local Amish farmers.  In addition to the Stratton family this partnership includes eight local Amish families from Lancaster County. Most of these are young couples with children who are looking to diversify their farm operations and provide opportunities for their families.

The first produce will be available in late June, 2008.  This venture is in addition to our regular market.  We will continue to operate the Wynnorr Farm produce market as always.

For our first season we are offering a 15 week subscription beginning in late June and continuing until late September.  Each week we plan to include an average of eight different items for each member share. Seasonal Produce will include more than 2 dozen types of produce. Not all items will be included each week.  Whenever possible, produce will be grown using naturally grown or organic methods. A full list of this year’s planned crops is listed below.

We will also occasionally include specialty items such as homemade mustard, jams, cut flowers and baked goods.   In addition, subscribers will have first choice to purchase, at an additional cost, free range eggs, chickens and Thanksgiving turkeys. At this time we are not offering “pick your own” produce. You will also have the opportunity to meet the farmers and their families during the season.

The cost for this season is $375 paid in advance. Memberships are limited to 50 families and are only available on a first come first served basis. (UPDATE 4/26/08:  WE'VE EXPANDED TO 100 FAMILIES)  By joining now, your family receives a summer of fresh local produce at a guaranteed low price.  Plans are underway for an additional fall season (October and November) that will be offered to summer members.

Our first season will include 15 weeks of produce with approximately 6-10 items each week. Vacation weeks or missed pick ups will not be refunded.  Shares are non transferable and are limited to 1 family (3-4 people) per share. Membership Card or Photo ID must be presented to pick up your weekly share. Your once weekly pick up will be at Wynnorr Farm.   If you are on vacation, you may send someone (with your membership card) to pick up your share.

Your share will include seasonal produce from the selection below. Not all items will be offered each week.
